Flights to Philadelphia, Charlotte Begin

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The first non-stop flights to Charlotte and Philadelphia started today at Fort Wayne International Airport.

And local leaders are celebrating it. In a ribbon cutting ceremony city, county and economic development officials welcomed the three round trip flights with American Airlines. The flight routes will use 50-seat regional jets. Officials say its more than just about the destination its about economic development. It's also about the viability of the community.

Scott Hinderman, the executive director of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority says, “They are looking at it as “this route will work long term,” so they made the decision to come.”

Mayor Tom Henry says airport activity is closely linked to a community. Consultants tell him, “If you don't have an active airport – if you don't have an airport that's business friendly and business person friendly, you'll never make it.” Henry added the new routes it open the city to the East Coast, Europe and South America with one stop.
