Fisherman Attacked Near South Bend

OSCEOLA, Ind. (WOWO):  Two men fishing were attacked by a disgruntled man who rammed their boat and and fled the scene. 

Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, 21 year old Justin Reinke of South Bend and 20 year old Dominick Tirotta of Granger were on the Saint Joseph River in Baugo Bay when 60 year old Robert Butts of Osceola stared shouting that the man.  However the shouting turned into ramming when Butts took his pontoon boat and struck their 16' fishing boat.  Reinke and Tirotta were thrown to the deck and their boat was damaged, but they left and continued fishing down the river.  

Butts followed the men and rammed their boat again.  The men called 911 and attempted to defend the boat from future attacks.  

Conservation Officers arrived and were able to locate both boats.  Butts had fled the scene, but they located his home.  He admitted to ramming the fisherman because they were fishing too late at night with bright lights.  All three men involved sustained minor injuries.  Butts was transported to the Saint Joseph Medical Center in Mishawaka for a cut above his eye and faces multiple charges including  Interfering with the Lawful Taking of Game, Criminal Recklessness, Operating a Motorboat While Intoxicated, Unsafe Operation of a Motorboat, and others that will be reviewed by the Saint Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
