First Church of Cannabis Gains Non-Profit Status

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): Your donations to the First Church of Cannabis are now tax deductible.

The Internal Revenue Service has granted the “Cannetarian” church nonprofit status. This means that any donations to the church can be claimed on your federal tax return as charitable. The church would also be eligible for a property tax exemption in Indiana as a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.

The church has raised almost $11,000 on a GoFundMe account but has yet to find a permanent home.

The church was created earlier this year by Bill Levin of Indianapolis as a test of the new Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which goes into effect on July 1st…the same day Levin plans on holding his first church service.
