Federal Transportation Officials Look at Safety in Gary

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ The northwest Indiana community of Gary has been selected by federal officials for a safety and transportation assessment.

Officials with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration and Federal Railroad Administration, among others, launched the effort Thursday afternoon at City Hall in Gary. Wearing brightly colored vests, they plan to bike, drive, walk and use other modes of transportation at 10 selected sites in the city to help determine safety and walkability.

The groups plan to present a report on their findings in the coming weeks. The idea is to offer advice on how to address safety issues and improve pedestrian and biking networks in the community.

Assessments also are being conducted in other cities nationwide.
