Ex-Purdue Student Agrees to Plea Deal in Choking Attack

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ A former Purdue University student accused of choking a fellow student with a phone cord has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a charge in the random attack.

The (Lafayette) Journal and Courier reports a plea agreement reached Wednesday calls for 22-year-old Chinese national Boda Wu to return immediately to China upon his conviction. A judge said he would determine whether to accept the agreement at a July 21 hearing.

Wu pleaded guilty but mentally ill to battery with a deadly weapon. The plea agreement calls for four other felony charges to be dismissed, and that his sentence match time already spent in custody.

Defense attorney Brian Dekker said Wu had psychotic break. He was found mentally unfit for trail in February, but was deemed competent last month following months of mental health treatment.
