Evansville Gets $500,000 Industrial Cleanup Loan

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – The Indiana Finance Authority has approved a $500,000 loan to the city of Evansville to help clean up a site tainted by decades of industrial operations.

Evansville will use the loan for cleanup work at the Swanson-Nunn site, a less than one-acre plot of land where a building housed laundry and dry-cleaning operations in the 1930s and later an electrical repair business that closed in the 1990s.

Vapors wafting from contamination at the site forced the closure of an adjacent child-care center in 2012, a year before asbestos and hazardous waste was removed from the building.

The building that once housed the businesses was demolished in March.

Evansville will have to repay the state's loan. That amount and any interest will return to the Indiana Finance Authority's brownfield fund.
