Estimates shows central Indiana communities growing fastest

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): New census estimates show four of five fastest growing Indiana counties and 10 of the 11 fastest-growing cities and towns with populations of at least 5,000 are in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

The 2015 population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau last week show suburban Hamilton County’s population grew by 13 percent over the last five years, followed by adjacent Boone County’s 12 percent growth. Hendricks and Johnson counties also made the top five, along with Tippecanoe, home to Lafayette.

The Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University says McCordsville in Hancock County was the state’s second-fastest-growing incorporated area with 6.1 percent growth, followed by Hendricks County’s Brownsburg at 5.5 percent.

It says the neighboring Lake County cities of Gary and Hammond had the largest population declines last year.
