Elkhart Officers Honored for Ending Store Attack

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) _ Leaders of a northern Indiana city have honored two police officers and a dispatcher for their roles in ending a gunman's deadly attack inside a grocery store.

Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore gave plaques Sunday to police corporals Cody Skipper and Jason Tripp and dispatcher Justin Yoder. Tripp and Skipper were the first officers on the scene of the Jan. 15 attack and shot the gunman as he threatened to shoot a manager of the Martin's Super Market.

Moore praised the officers for responding immediately and saving the lives of others.

U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly joined the ceremony at The Lerner Theatre. Donnelly says the community mourns the deaths of store employee Krystle Dikes and shopper Rachelle Godfread, but is safer for the officers' bravery.
