Elkhart County Fires 10 of 35 Truck Drivers

GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) _ A northern Indiana county has fired 10 of the 35 truck drivers is has to plow snow, patch streets and do other road work.

Elkhart County commissioners President Terry Rodino says the jobs were eliminated in a budget-cutting move. County human resources director Carol Caviness tells The Elkhart Truth the move will save $400,000 a year.

Caviness says the highway department is working to find ways to do more with less. Rodino says county officials have a limited amount of money to run the department and are doing the best they can.

Word of the job cuts came Friday, a day when officials reported 34 crashes and eight vehicles sliding off roads because of slick conditions caused by snow in the county just east of South Bend.
