Education Board Grants Charter School Grade Change

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The State Board of Education is granting a special grade change to the Indianapolis charter school at the center of last year's grade-change scandal.

The Indianapolis charter school founded by Republican donor Christel DeHaan will see its grade jump from a “D” to a “B.”
The board voted 10-1 Wednesday to ignore Christel House's high school scores in calculating its school grade. Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz was the only member to oppose the change.

Board members who supported the change argued that Christel House was being treated unfairly by the grading formula.

Former schools Superintendent Tony Bennett secretly altered the school grading formula two years ago to ensure that Christel House received an “A.”

The Bennett grade change launched an intensive review of how the state awards grades to schools.
