FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): There seems to be a trend to the homicides in Fort Wayne so far this year.

Last month, there were five people killed in Fort Wayne: four women and an unborn child. While that’s more than the number of killings that happened in January 2016 or 2017, that’s not what’s gotten some people’s attention.

The Journal Gazette reports that the four women killed are already more than half the total number of females killed all of last year when just 7 of the 41 homicide victims in 2017 were women.

Fort Wayne Police Chief Steve Reed is blaming an “acceptance of violence” within parts of the community. The national homicide rate for women went up recently, after decreasing for almost a decade.
