Dump Truck Crash Kills 1, Closes Indiana Highway

FRENCH LICK, Ind. (AP) _ State police say a crash that killed a dump truck driver closed a southern Indiana highway for several hours as crews worked to remove the vehicle from the roadway.

Police say 28-year-old Gared Blake Allen of West Baden was driving a Sterling dump truck partially loaded with soil when he drove off the edge of State Road 56 about 7:30 a.m. Monday for an unknown reason. Allen's truck slid down into a ditch, overturned and struck a tree near French Lick.

Police say Allen, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Philip Hensley says the highway remained closed at 11:30 a.m. but was expected to reopen by early Monday afternoon after crews used a trailer to remove the truck.
