Driver Dies after Being Pulled from Waterway

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A woman has died after being pulled from an SUV that submerged in an Indianapolis waterway after it careened off a city street.

Indianapolis Fire Capt. Rita Reith (rite) says 25-year-old Miranda Dermanelian died at Methodist Hospital on Friday after being pulled from Fall Creek by fire department divers Friday morning.

Reith says bystanders jumped into the water and tried to rescue the woman before the fire department arrived. Other bystanders saw them use a hammer to break out a driver's side window, but the current pushed the SUV downstream and below the water.

Witnesses say the SUV was driving fast and ran a red light before it veered off Allisonville Road and entered the water. Reith says the crash remains under investigation.
