Drifts Closing Many Roads Across Northern Indiana

ANGOLA, Ind. (AP) _ About a dozen counties across northern Indiana are asking that everyone except emergency workers stay off the roads as high winds are causing deep snow drifts in many areas.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security reports all counties in the northern third of the state are warning drivers of hazardous conditions.

Steuben County emergency management director Kristy Clawson says winds gusting to 30 mph at times are blowing rural north-south roads back shut soon after highway crews get them plowed. She says some spots in the northeastern Indiana county have had drifts several feet deep.

Clawson says most people seem to following warnings and staying off the roads.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is asking people not to drive as crews work to keep up with the drifting.
