Dozens Displaced By NW Indiana Apartment Fire

HIGHLAND, Ind. (AP) _ Officials say dozens of people have been displaced from their homes by a fire that badly damaged a northwestern Indiana apartment building.

Flames shot above the roof of the three-story building in the Highland apartment complex after the fire broke out Thursday. No injuries were reported, but firefighters worked for hours to completely extinguish the blaze.

Resident Debbie Schulp tells The Times of Munster ( ) that she was at the complex with her family when others first spotted flames on a third-floor balcony. She and others ran to the building, where they pulled the fire alarm and rang door bells to warn people.

Property manager Paul Kincaid says 22 units in the building were occupied and that the complex's insurance company would pay for displaced families to stay in hotels.
