Disabled Teen Brought in Weighing about 40 Pounds

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – Police have arrested the father of a mentally disabled 15-year-old girl who authorities say was brought to a central Indiana hospital weighing only about 40 pounds.

Anderson police Detective Joel Sandefur says the girl was flown to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition on Monday. Sandefur tells The Herald Bulletin the girl's condition could be life threatening.

Investigators jailed 58-year-old Steve Sells of Anderson on a preliminary charge of child neglect. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

Sandefur tells WTHR-TV the investigation includes looking into statements from Sells blaming his daughter's low weight on a medical condition.

Neighbor Thomas McAllister says he is baffled by the arrest as Sells made it seem he was a caring father.
