Defense Attorney: Insanity Defense to be Offered for Suspect

HARTFORD CITY, Ind. (AP) – A lawyer for an Indiana man accused in the deaths of two Hartford City residents says he will present an insanity defense on behalf of his client.

Charles R. Whittington is accused of fatally shooting 40-year-old Shane Paul Williamson and his 5-year-old daughter, Katelin, on Feb. 5 at the apartment building where the victims lived.

During a Monday hearing, Blackford Circuit Court Dean Young told defense attorney Chris Teagle that he would appoint a psychologist and a psychiatrist to examine the 59-year-old defendant upon receiving the defense motion of an insanity defense.

Whittington, who is being held without bond in the Blackford County Jail, was formally informed Monday that prosecutors have filed gun charges against him, which could increase his prison term if convicted.
