Councilwoman: Alcoholism leads to expletives…

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ An Evansville City councilwoman blames an ongoing struggle with alcoholism for expletive-filled exchanges with other council members and her former campaign chairman, who filed a protective order against her with the Evansville Police Department.

Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley tells the Evansville Courier & Press she spent time in a rehabilitation center in 2012 and suffered a relapse earlier this year. She says she's working to overcome her drinking problem.

She says she regrets the meanness in some of her messages, saying it's a problem she needs to address.

Former campaign chairman Alex Ward says Brinkerhoff-Riley told him in a Facebook posting he “needs a bullet. And that would be humane.''

Jarvis called the posting indicative of a pattern of behavior with her.

Brinkerhoff-Riley says she is not a threat to Jarvis.
