Councilman Calls For Changes To Downtown Fort Wayne Parking Structure

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO):  The Civic Center Parking Garage is called the 'invisible' building by Fort Wayne City Councilman, Tom Smith, who says the space could be put to better use.

Our partners in news at 21Alive say Smith doesn't want to compromise the number of spaces but instead, move them around so redevelopment can happen inside the structure and eventually, on the rest of the block.

The parking structure connects the Hilton Fort Wayne to the Grand Wayne Convention Center, so the area generally sees a lot of foot traffic.

“Think about shops, stores, maybe a hotel as part of it. You could start over and this is a premium piece of downtown land,” Smith told reporters.

The city of Fort Wayne owns surrounding property near Washington, Jefferson, Calhoun, and Clinton Streets. However, if ownership of the structure was switched to a private sector, Smith says the building could start collecting tax revenue.
