Council gives early approval to Public Safety Director

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Fort Wayne City Council gave preliminary approval to the creation of the position of Director of Public Safety at their meeting last night.

Last week, Mayor Tom Henry nominated Police Chief Rusty York to the position.  The ordinance to create the position passed in committee 9-0. An official council vote will come next week.

During Tuesday's meeting, council addressed the issue of the growing homicide rate. York responded by talking about the grant offered from the U.S. Department of Justice that would allow the Fort Wayne police department to add 10 new police officers in 2015.
