Council Approves Floodplain Buyout Plan

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Fort Wayne City Council has unanimously approved the buyouts of 18 homes in floodplains around the city.

The vote Tuesday night was for a $1.1 million flood mitigation grant. Much of the $1.1 million is coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Journal-Gazette is reporting 18 homeowners have expressed interest in selling their properties, but the city says they're also free to reconsider and the money will remain with the city or go back to FEMA. Fort Wayne had to compete with other cities to get the funding.

More buyout plans could be coming in the coming months for other homes.
