Coroner: Gunman in police shooting killed himself

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP): A coroner says a gunman who critically wounded a northwest Indiana police officer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Lake County coroner's office announced the manner of death of 33-year-old Michael Hrnciar late Saturday afternoon.

Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force spokesman Robert Byrd said 24-year-old Merrillville police officer Nickolaus Schultz remained on life support in a Chicago area hospital Saturday. He described Schultz's condition as “very grave.”

Officers were responding to calls about an evicted tenant who had apparently moved back into a condominium in Merrillville when the shootout happened late Friday night.

Police called in a bomb squad to sweep the home following the confrontation after explosive devices were found. The scene was later declared safe.

Police say Hrnciar was wearing body armor.
