Converted Bus Crash In SW Indiana, Killing Driver

OWENSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ An Illinois man has died after the converted school bus he was driving struck a tree in southwestern Indiana.

Gibson County Coroner Barrett Doyle says 72-year-old Harold E. Tubbs of Fairfield, Illinois, died in the crash Saturday morning.

Sgt. Bruce Vanoven of the Gibson County Sheriff's Office says Tubbs was driving a 2001 International school bus that had been modified to haul watermelons. Vanoven says the bus veered off Indiana 165 near the town of Owensville and Tubbs overcorrected, sending the vehicle across both lanes of traffic and into the tree.

Tubbs was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash about 20 miles northwest of Evansville.

Vanoven says only Tubbs was aboard the bus at the time.
