Commissioners Retain Control of Steuben 911 Center

ANGOLA, Ind. (WOWO): Steuben County Commissioners aren't budging on 911. Despite appeals from Sheriff Tim Troyer to hand over control to his department, they are firm the 911 Communications Center will remain under their authority.

In a similar meeting last week, commissioners challenged claims of a staffing crisis.

Yesterday they had the same message, but this time a strong, clear “no” to the sheriff's request.

The decision comes after other law enforcement agencies offered their support for the plan that would have handed over the dispatch center. Commissioners say they are making key hires and a considering bringing in a consultant to fine tune the operation.

Two weeks ago, the sheriff temporarily reassigned deputies to the communications center, when the department dwindled to three full-time employees.
