Columbia City shoe store theft leads to high-speed police chase

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WOWO): Just before 7 p.m. Friday, police in Columbia City received a call from Shoe Show at 438 W Plaza Drive to report a theft that had just occurred. Employees said a man walked out of the store with a pair of Nike shoes, and left in a silver car. The plate did not match the vehicle, and returned as stolen out of Fort Wayne.

Police checked the area and located the vehicle in traffic at US 30 and State Road 109. The suspect vehicle fled, and police initiated a pursuit eastbound on US 30. Police say the pursuit reached speeds up to 115 miles per hour, and the suspect vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic. Stop sticks were used in the area of Sweetwater Sound by Allen Co Police, but missed the vehicle.

At US 30 and I-69, the suspect vehicle crashed into two other vehicles just prior to stopping on I-69. The driver, 35-year-old Matthew Woods of Fort Wayne, was taken into custody by officers from Whitley County Sheriff’s and Columbia City Police.

It is unknown if there were any injuries to any occupants in the vehicles involved in the crash with Woods.
