Coats, Walorski, Carson React to Hagel Resignation

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Members of Indiana's congressional delegation are thanking Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel for his service after he announced his resignation.

Republican Sen. Dan Coats serves on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, says he didn't support Hagel's appointment as defense secretary but thanks him for his service to the nation throughout his career.

Both Coats and Republican Rep. Jackie Walorski say President Barack Obama and his national security advisers prevented Hagel from achieving more success as defense secretary. Walorski serves on the House Armed Services Committee, as does Democratic Rep. Andre Carson.

Carson says he always appreciated Hagel's honest assessment and advice, especially in difficult circumstances.

Hagel will step down as defense secretary once a successor is confirmed.
