FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): An oasis in the desert. The food desert, that is.
A food desert is an area that's more than a mile away from a source of fresh, healthy foods. It often leads to unhealthy choices.
Officials say they hope a solution will likely spring up after a new urban farm and community center has been built near the Renaissance Point neighborhood.
At old Fire Station #9, they've renovated the structure and planted a nearby garden in a $430,000 project funded by federal Community Development grants.
The vintage station will house workshops in gardening, healthy eating and cooking.
