City Council Rejects Mayor’s Budget Proposal

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry did not get the deal he wanted when he pitched his new budget plan before the City Council last night. The original plan was to raise your property taxes just under 6%. When the mayor realized that wasn’t going to fly, he decided to use the 75 million dollar legacy fund, grab the interest from that, and raise your property taxes just under 3%. At the City Council meeting last night, the Council liked the idea of the interest grab, so they’re going ahead with that and, at this point, are squashing the property tax increase. The argument that is being made is why raise property taxes when the interest alone from this fund could pay for that, why do we need to raise taxes?
