Carr Takes Over as Indiana Adjutant General from Umbarger

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Brigadier General Courtney Carr has taking over the helm of the Indiana National Guard from retiring Major General Martin Umbarger .

Carr, from Columbus, was formally installed as Indiana's adjutant general during a change of command ceremony Saturday at the Indiana World War Memorial plaza attended by nearly 500 military personnel from across Indiana and the nation.

Carr last served in the Pentagon as the Army's deputy director of operations, readiness and mobilization. He served with the Indiana Guard from 1991 to 2011 and led the 2007 deployment of about 4,500 Guard members to Iraq. Carr also commanded a Guard deployment to Bosnia in 2002.

Umbarger, appointed by former Governor Joe Kernan in 2004, served 11 years as Indiana's top military commander.  His service with the Guard extended 42 years.
