INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): For the second year in a row, Ed Carpenter will start from the pole at the Indianapolis 500.

Carpenter won his second straight pole position with a four lap average of 231.067 miles per hour. He says his team did a phenomenal job preparing not only his car but the car of his teammate, JR Hildebrand. Hildebrand will start ninth.

“I feel like very year coming in, I have this giant fear that we're going to be really slow and really struggle,” Carpenter says. “So I think me annoying the guys I think may be what keeps them working so hard so they can shut me up when finally do get here.”

Joining Carpenter on the front row is James Hinchcliffe, who just one week ago was recovering from a concussion suffered at the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis. He hadn't been cleared to drive until Thursday and before then, his former teammate E.J. Viso filled in during practice sessions. Hinchcliffe says this past week was the definition of teamwork.

“This is why I'm here, from the safety workers to pulled me out of the car last Saturday to everybody tuning on my race car, a lot of people are responsible for us being here today,” says Hinchcliffe.

Current championship points leader Will Power will start on the outside of row one. Row two consists of three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, the winner of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis Simon Pagenaud and Marco Andretti. Carlos Munoz and Josef Newgarden will join Hildebrand on row three.

NASCAR star Kurt Busch, who will attempt to complete “the double” by racing in the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, will start 12th. Last year's Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan will start 16th.

The green flag for the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500 waves at noon today.
