FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21 ALIVE) – It’s been one year since little Aliahna Lemmon was brutally murdered and dismembered. Saturday night, the community decided to remember something good—the life of the nine-year-old girl.

The organization Wings of Innocence held a candlelight vigil at Holland Elementary School Saturday night, where Aliahna was a third grader.

About 30 people gathered and recited the Lord’s Prayer, sang “Amazing Grace” and recited a poem. Some even shared thoughts and memories they had of the little girl.

Although the vigil was in honor of Aliahna, it was also to bring awareness and make sure something like this never happens again.

“I just can’t imagine what a child goes through when they’re being hurt this way. And it really bothers me, and that’s the reason I fight for children,” said Tina Cavanaugh with Wings of Innocence.

“I’m just really sorry that it took that to get people’s attention,” said Joy Griffin, a mother of three. “And, I’m going to do whatever I can to prevent it—anything similar to it—from happening again.”

Griffin’s 10-year-old daughter, Jasmine, was in Aliahna’s 3rd grade class last year. She says if she could talk to Aliahna again, she’d say, “I miss you.”

Members of Wings of Innocence say their goal is to keep Aliahna’s memory alive, and raise money to help prevent violence against children.
