INDIANA (WOWO): If the warm weather has you itching to start home projects, you might want to check where you’re digging.

Residents are asked to contact Indiana 811 before projects like landscaping, putting in a fence, installing a mailbox or building a deck, pond or patio to prevent digging into utility lines, according to Indiana 811.

Digging into an underground utility line can cause serious injury and cost a lot in repairs if gas, electric, communication, water or sewer lines are damaged.

Homeowners are instructed to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before digging. When a homeowner calls, they are connected to a local call notification center. Then a professional locator will visit the dig site to mark the approximate location of underground utility lines with spray paint or flags.

To contact Indiana 811, dial 811 or visit the organization’s website.
