BP Starts New Unit at NW Indiana Oil Refinery

WHITING, Ind. (AP) _ BP says its northwestern Indiana oil refinery is back at full production with major unit back in operation.

The oil giant says startup of the new 250,000 barrel-per-day crude distillation unit at the Whiting Refinery marks a major milestone in the ongoing $3.8 billion upgrade and expansion of the facility along Lake Michigan.

The Times of Munster reports the work has kept the refinery below its production capacity of 413,000 barrels a day. That has been among the reasons cited by analysts for higher gasoline prices in the Midwest.

Other units expected to be completed later this year will allow the refinery to significantly increase processing of crude oil from the Canadian tar sands region.
