Bone Fragment of Saint Taken in Church Burglary

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP): Police in Muncie say a burglar took what's believed to be a bone fragment from a 15th century saint when he broke into a church rectory.

Police say a priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church found the man rifling through his belongings when he returned to the rectory after a service Sunday afternoon. The priest told police that the man pulled out a hammer before fleeing.

The Star Press reports officers later found the 53-year-old man with the saint relic and other items.

Police returned the relic to the church. The bone fragment is said to be from St. Rita, an Italian nun who died in 1457 and was canonized in 1900.

The man was jailed on burglary charges.
