INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has asked a court to block the release of video depositions in a lawsuit that claims the agency overcharged motorists.

Attorneys for the BMV argue that the release of the depositions could discourage witnesses from testifying for fear of receiving public scrutiny and unwanted media attention.

The Indianapolis Star reports the agency requested a protective order in Marion Superior Court on Wednesday.

The move follows the release of the video deposition of former BMV Deputy Director Matthew Foley. Foley testified under oath that top agency officials knew for years that they were overcharging customers but hid the practice to avoid budget problems.

The lawsuit claims the BMV overcharged motorists $30 million to $40 million dating from the early 2000s.
