BMV Lawyers Defend Embattled State Agency

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Lawyers for the embattled Bureau of Motor Vehicles are fighting back in an ongoing legal battle involving overcharges by the state agency.

Lawyers for the state argued this week that they are trying to correct problems in the agency, but are being stifled by opposing lawyer Irwin Levin.

The BMV is accused of overcharging drivers for several services. The current lawsuit continues one year after a similar suit _ involving overcharges for driver's licenses _ was settled by the state.

It also comes as state officials announced last month the discovery of $29 million in overcharges for 180,000 residents. Gov. Mike Pence then ordered an independent audit.

Levin said Thursday that the state is attempting to steer attention away from deep problems within the agency.
