INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) – A small group of big-money donors is playing strong in Indiana's 2014 elections despite the absence of marquee races.
More than $13 million of the $35 million in donations tracked by the state through Tuesday has come from single donations of $10,000 or more. Northwest Indiana hotel tycoon Dean White has accounted for $1.3 million of those contributions.
Indiana politics expert Andy Downs says both parties have long relied on a handful of major donors to fund campaigns because state law doesn't limit individual contributions.
The money isn't showing up on air yet.
An analysis of on-air spending conducted by the Washington-based Center for Public Integrity and Kantar Media/CMAG released Wednesday found that Indiana candidates had spent just $342,000 on television advertising through September.
