Area voter turnout strong, especially for Republicans

(Pat Miller/WOWO)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Area polling places were very busy yesterday.

While no official turnout percentage was immediately available, WOWO News took publicly available data to estimate a 49% turnout for Allen County, with nearly 127,000 out of more than 258,000 voters showing up at the polls.

Andy Downs with the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics says turnout varied by party:

“We had some really high turnout in counties that are typically considered Republican counties, while the total of votes cast in the three biggest Democratic strongholds was lower than what we saw in 2008.”

Downs adds that, as far as Indiana is concerned, Republicans did a much better job motivating their “base” to vote than Democrats did.
