Area VA nursing home among worst-ranked nationwide

MARION, Ind. (WOWO): A Veterans Affairs nursing home in Grant County is among nearly half such facilities getting the agency’s lowest possible ranking.

A report from USA Today says 60 of the V.A.’s 133 nursing homes, spread across 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, are basically failing, getting 1 out of 5 stars on the agency’s internal ranking system. That includes the one in Marion.

The data shows a whopping 32.6% of residents reporting pain within the past five days, compared to about 5.6% in private sector facilities, and also poor numbers on catheters being left in residents’ bladders and high-risk residents with serious bed sores.

V.A. officials argue that their system compares closely with private homes, despite taking care of “typically sicker” patients, and call the report “misleading.”
