Annual Cleanup Aimed at Roadside Litter in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Spring is here and it's time to spruce up Indiana's highways again.

The Indiana Department of Transportation's annual Trash Bash begins Saturday and runs through April 27. The event coincides with Earth Day.

In 2013 more than 20,000 bags of trash were collected from alongside 3,400 miles of Indiana roadways by maintenance crews, prison inmates and volunteers. Crews also gathered more than 1,250 cubic yards of loose debris, including an electric meter, a laptop computer, a horse whip and other items.

The Department of Transportation encourages Indiana residents to set a good example by carrying trash bags in their cars instead of tossing debris out windows.
