MUNCIE, Ind. (AP): Nearly a dozen dogs have been rounded up and rescued from a field in eastern Indiana.

The Star Press of Muncie reports that some of the dogs had to be pulled Wednesday from a Delaware County drainage pile. The Muncie Animal Shelter was called by someone who saw the dogs running in the field.

Animal shelter director Ethan Browning said the dogs possibly were abandoned, appeared terrified, and were behaving defensively. Ten of the dogs were chihuahua-type mix breeds. One was a mixed-breed terrier.

The dogs were to receive full medical checkups.
