ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): Allen County residents aren’t breathing as easy as they may think.

The American Lung Association released its annual air quality report on Wednesday and Allen County is not doing well, according to the Journal Gazette.

Allen County got a failing grade for ozone pollution and a D for particle pollution. Particle pollution is a mix of tiny solid and liquid particles in the air. Ozone pollution is smog.

Air pollution and ozone pollution could cause developmental harm, reproductive harm, asthma attacks, lung cancer, cardiovascular harm and lung tissue swelling, according to the American Lung Association.

In the last two years, Allen County received a D for both ozone and particle pollution.

“Given so many people in Indiana have some form of lung disease either COPD or asthma, we need to make every effort to ensure that we have good air quality which in turn results in fewer physicians visits and lost productivity from work,” Dr. Deborah McMahan, health commissioner of Allen County, said.

“In addition individually we all need to do what we can do to decrease particulate air matter and ozone. One simple thing we can do is ride share or simply drive less often and walk more.”
