Allen County Judge John Surbeck Wins Top National Award

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A Fort Wayne judge has won a top national award. The National Center for State Courts is giving Allen Superior Court Judge John Surbeck its William Rehnquist Award recognizing excellence among state court judges. The Journal Gazette reported Wednesday that Chief Justice John Roberts will present the award to Surbeck at the U.S. Supreme Court in November. Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Dickson nominated Surbeck for the award. National Center for State Courts President Mary McQueen says Surbeck’s colleagues regard him as a pioneer in the field of re-entry courts, which release convicts from prison early but monitor them more closely than under parole or probation. Allen County’s re-entry court became the first in Indiana in 2001.  Last year’s Rehnquist Award winner was a Massachusetts appeals court judge.
