AG to Head Case of Ex-Cop Charged with Rape, Stalking

CLEVELAND (AP) _ The state's attorney general's office is set to take over an investigation of a former northeast Ohio police officer accused of raping and stalking a woman.

A Cuyahoga County judge earlier this week appointed state Attorney General Mike DeWine's office to oversee the case of the former Pepper Pike and East Cleveland police officer.

The 55-year-old man was arrested last month and charged with rape and menacing by stalking in Bedford. He is accused of following the woman multiple times when she went to police to accuse him of rape.

County prosecutors say they mistakenly received information that Bedford police submitted after investigating charges against the man.

Prosecutors say the information raised potential conflicts with rights meant to protect officers from incriminating themselves.
