Additional Area Code Proposed for Central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) – An additional telephone area code is being proposed for Indianapolis and many of its suburban communities.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has scheduled five public hearings on the proposal to create an overlay for the existing 317 zone so that a second area code would be established. Under such a system, existing phone numbers would keep the 317 code, with the additional code available for new numbers.

A filing from the telecommunications industry to the utility commission projects the 317 zone will run out of available phone numbers in 2017.

Hearings on the proposed charges are scheduled for Indianapolis, Carmel, Franklin, Danville and Greenfield.

The commission last year approved a new 930 area code as an overlay for southern Indiana's current 812 zone.
