FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Adams County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Shane Rekeweg, and 10 jail officers.

The family of Jeremy Oswalt filed the suit in federal court Thursday, saying that Oswalt’s death while in custody at the Adams County Jail last September was due to officers ignoring his bipolar disorder and psychosis diagnosis, putting him in isolation, restraining him while naked and dumping buckets of water on him, and leaving him lying on the floor of his cell, until he lapsed into a coma and died.

Oswalt had been arrested August 1, 2016 for assaulting several individuals at a convenience store. He was arrested and taken to the Adams County Jail. His family says he had suffered a psychotic break.

The lawsuit accuses those named as allowing Oswalt to die a “slow, tragic and unnecessary death” with “deliberate indifference”.

When reached by WOWO News, Rekeweg issued the following statement: “I cannot comment on any current suits filed against the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.”
