FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP): An abused dog that was evidence in an animal cruelty case now is being sought so much for adoption that Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control is holding a lottery to decide who gets it.

The News-Sentinel reports the 18-month-old mixed-breed dog named Sawyer had two broken front legs.

Since the cruelty case remains an open investigation, the shelter is limiting the adoption lottery to families living in Allen County. It will pick the prospective owners and allow them to meet Sawyer Tuesday afternoon.

The shelter also will pick two alternates, in case the lottery winners decide not to adopt Sawyer.
