84-Year-Old Man Charged in Hit-and-Run Death, Pleads Guilty

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): 84-year-old Howard Lininger of New Haven, pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to leaving the scene of a fatal accident, where 25-year old Haley Nancarrow of Fort Wayne, died.

According to our partners in news at 21 Alive, the plea agreement calls for no jail time, but Lininger will lose his license for six years.

The accident happened just after 10:00 p.m. on November 18th, 2014.  Police received calls about a woman lying on the side of the road.

Lininger's attorney, Mark Paul Smith, says Lininger thought someone threw a whiskey bottle at his car, shattering the windshield. Smith says Lininger got out of his vehicle and found the bottle lying in the street, but didn't see the body further back on the roadside. Police say Nancarrow had been carrying the bottle.

Lininger was arrested after he reported the damage to his vehicle, to his grandson, a police officer.

He'll learn his sentence March 16.
