KENTLAND, Ind. (AP): Authorities say a 73-year-old neighbor helped rescue family members as they jumped from a roof of their burning home in a small northwestern Indiana town.
Jesse Vernon says he was taking out some trash when he saw flames coming from the house in the Newton County town of Kentland.
Vernon tells the Journal & Courier he ran over and saw the family members on their porch roof yelling for help. He told them to jump and he helped catch the two adults and three children.
The fire burned into early Tuesday, leveling much of the two-story house in the town about 40 miles northwest of Lafayette.
Kentland assistant fire chief Matt Wittenborn says the blaze spread quickly through the older house.
The family members suffered minor injuries.
