3 Charged in Indiana Jail Inmate’s Escape

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Prosecutors in northern Indiana have charged three people with escape after a convicted burglar awaiting sentencing crashed a bread delivery truck through a security gate and fled in a waiting car.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office in South Bend filed charges were Franklin Rice of South Bend and Phetsamone Kaviyakone, both 27, and 21-year-old Priscilla Minjarez. Rice also faces a misdemeanor criminal conversion charge for taking the bread truck.

All three were being held Wednesday at the jail. Records there didn’t indicate whether they had attorneys.

Police have said Rice escaped about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, using keys left in the truck’s ignition to start it, then crashed through the gate and fled in a waiting car driven by Kaviyakone and provided by Minjarez. They were arrested later that day.
